Since Windows always tries to download and install the latest updates, in most cases you will simply see a screen informing you that your device is up-to-date and when the latest update was made. Eventually you can press the 'Check for updates' button and Windows will automatically check if there are any new updates available.

In the 'Advanced Options' section, you can see further advanced functions. Among them, make sure you have selected "Give me updates for other Microsoft products when I update Windows" so that other Microsoft products are also kept up-to-date.

For all other software installed on your Windows devices, make sure they are always up-to-date by clicking on their icon in the bar and pressing 'Check for Updates' or 'Update'.

Each software places the update button in different sections, so each software may be different from the example shown.

  3. If "Software Update" tells you that your Mac is up to date, that means macOS is up to date and so are the included apps, including Safari, Music, Photos, Books, Messages, Mail, Calendar, and FaceTime.

  4. To automatically install future updates, even for apps downloaded from the App Store, select "Keep your Mac automatically updated". Your Mac alerts you when updates require a reboot, so you can also choose to install them later.
